Over 20 years of production in Vietnam, with extensive work in Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue, means we know the locations, the regulations, the crews, and the logistics.

Do I need a filming permit to film in Da Nang?

It depends on your project. The type of production, the locations involved, the size of your crew, the content being filmed, and whether the production is visible to the public all factor into what is actually required.

What we can tell you from over 20 years of managing productions across Vietnam is that Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue each have their own permit dynamics. Filming in Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, involves different requirements than shooting on Da Nang Beach or inside a private resort. Some situations are straightforward. Others require coordination with the Ministry of Culture, provincial authorities, and local heritage management.

Every project is different. Contact us and we will tell you exactly what applies to your shoot. Reach out at info@em-production.com or use our contact form.

How do I obtain a filming permit for Da Nang?

Filming permits in Da Nang are issued through the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, with coordination through local provincial authorities. The process involves documentation, translations, government coordination, and lead times that vary depending on the type of production and the locations involved.

Generally you will need a content summary or script, passport details for foreign crew, a location schedule, and an equipment list. Productions involving Hoi An Ancient Town, Hue’s imperial sites, or other heritage locations may require additional applications and longer lead times.

EM Productions manages the full permit application process for our clients. Every project is different, so contact us to discuss what your specific shoot requires. Reach out at info@em-production.com or use our contact form.

What are the rules for drone filming in Da Nang?

Drone use in Da Nang requires a separate permit from the Ministry of Defense, even if you already hold a standard filming permit. The two permits are issued by different government bodies.

The application requires operator details, drone specifications, flight coordinates, and a schedule of use. Certain areas near Da Nang International Airport, military installations along the coast, Son Tra Peninsula, and parts of Hoi An Ancient Town may be restricted or require additional approvals. Operating a drone without a permit in Vietnam carries serious consequences, including fines, confiscation, and potential blacklisting.

Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue offer outstanding aerial opportunities, from coastline and mountain passes to river deltas and heritage architecture. If drone footage is part of your shoot, bring it up early and we will map out what is feasible. Reach out at info@em-production.com or use our contact form.

Are there restricted filming areas in Da Nang and Hoi An?

Yes. Military zones, government buildings, certain coastal areas near Da Nang International Airport, and sensitive public spaces have restrictions on filming. Some require additional permits. Others cannot be filmed at all.

Hoi An Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has its own set of filming regulations managed by the local heritage authority. Permits, fees, and restrictions on equipment and crew size apply. Hue’s imperial citadel and royal tombs carry similar heritage-level requirements.

Beyond formal restrictions, practical considerations also apply. Hoi An’s narrow streets and high tourist density during peak season can create challenges for larger productions. Da Nang Beach and the Hai Van Pass are more accessible but still require planning for traffic and public safety coordination.

EM Productions has managed shoots in Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue for years and knows which locations are straightforward and which need careful planning. Contact us before you lock a location. Reach out at info@em-production.com or use our contact form.

Can I bring my own equipment to Da Nang?

In most cases, yes. Da Nang has its own international airport with direct flights from Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, and other major cities, which simplifies equipment logistics compared to routing everything through Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

If you are a small crew with mid-size professional equipment, arrival is generally straightforward. When a film permit is in place, we liaise with customs in advance so equipment inspections go smoothly.

Vietnam is not a carnet country, which makes temporarily importing large equipment more complex and more expensive. For most productions, it is more practical and cost-effective to rent equipment locally. Da Nang’s rental market is smaller than Ho Chi Minh City’s, but we coordinate equipment from our Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi partners and have it delivered to your Da Nang location before your crew arrives.

If you are unsure what to bring versus what to rent, contact us and we will help you make the most cost-effective decision for your project.

Do I need a film fixer for filming in Da Nang?

Working with a local production partner in Da Nang is strongly recommended for international crews. Permit processes in Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue, location access requirements, language barriers, and regional logistics are complex without experienced on the ground support.

This is especially true for productions involving Hoi An Ancient Town, Hue’s heritage sites, or remote locations like the Hai Van Pass and Phong Nha caves. Each of these locations has its own access requirements and coordination needs.

EM Productions provides full fixer services in Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue. We handle everything from permit applications and location management to bilingual on-set assistance and equipment coordination. Over 20 years of production experience across Vietnam means we know what keeps a shoot on schedule and on budget.

What are the best filming locations in Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue?

Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue offer one of the most concentrated collections of diverse filming locations in Vietnam.

Da Nang itself provides modern urban environments, wide beaches, the Dragon Bridge, and the Son Tra Peninsula with its coastal jungle. Hoi An delivers the ancient town’s lantern-lit streets, the Thu Bon River, tailored shopfronts, and surrounding rice paddies. The Hai Van Pass is one of the most cinematic mountain roads in Vietnam. Ba Na Hills offers the Golden Bridge and a French colonial hill station. The Marble Mountains provide caves, temples, and elevated coastal views.

Farther north, Hue offers the imperial citadel, royal tombs, the Perfume River, and centuries of architectural history. Phong Nha, home to the largest cave system in the world, is accessible from Da Nang for productions that need dramatic underground environments.

EM Productions has location scouted across Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue extensively. Contact us and we can match locations to your visual brief. Reach out at info@em-production.com or use our contact form.

What studio facilities are available in Da Nang?

Da Nang’s dedicated studio infrastructure is still developing compared to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. However, there are options for smaller studio setups, and many productions in Da Nang and Hoi An use practical locations, resorts, hotels, and private spaces as controlled shooting environments.

For productions that require a full studio with cyclorama, controlled lighting, or set builds, we can coordinate facilities from Ho Chi Minh City or recommend suitable alternatives in the Da Nang area based on your specific needs.

Contact us with your brief and we will find the right solution. Reach out at info@em-production.com or use our contact form.

What is the best time of year to film in Da Nang?

Da Nang and Hoi An have a different weather pattern from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The best filming window runs from February through August, with the driest and most consistent conditions typically between March and June.

September through November brings the heaviest rainfall, and October and November carry the highest risk of flooding and typhoons. This period is best avoided for outdoor productions unless you have schedule flexibility.

December and January are cooler and occasionally overcast but generally workable. Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year, usually late January or early February) reduces crew availability significantly across all of Vietnam. Plan around it.

We help clients schedule productions around weather windows and local events to avoid disruptions.
