Description
Blue Whale (Ca Voi Xanh in Vietnamese) is the biggest gas field discovered offshore Vietnam to date. It sits about 100 kilometres off the central coast. ExxonMobil holds a 64 percent working interest and is developing it with PetroVietnam, EVN and Sembcorp. The government in Hanoi expects roughly $20 billion in revenue over the project’s life, and the gas will feed four power plants in the Dung Quat and Chu Lai economic zones.
The shoot was four days in Hanoi and Da Nang. Nobody films Blue Whale itself — the rig is a hundred kilometres out and not the kind of place you helicopter a camera crew into — so the job was to suggest the scale of the thing through interviews and on-shore locations. That made permits the hard part. Filming an oil and gas project in central Vietnam means a handful of government agencies, and drone clearance there is not casual. Our Hanoi producer spent weeks on the phone before Myriad’s crew landed.
Once the cameras were rolling we ran the Vietnamese-side camera, lighting and grip departments while Myriad’s directors handled the film. Post happened back in the UK; we sent the rushes home clean. ExxonMobil uses the finished piece to brief partners and government stakeholders on the project’s progress.
